Pick the sunniest spot you have
Six hours of direct sun is the whole secret. Watch your yard for a day and pick the spot that gets morning light — flowers grown in morning sun hold their color longer in Texas heat.
Start with a 4 × 8 bed
Big enough for real bouquets, small enough to water by hand on a hot week. Five or six varieties is plenty for a first year.
Choose a focal, a filler and a texture
Zinnias for the focal flower, cosmos for airy filler, celosia for texture. Every bouquet you make will look composed without any effort.
Cut more than feels polite
Cutting is pruning. The more stems you take, the more the plant makes. Cut in the cool morning, straight into a bucket of water.
